New Balance A/C Inc. has evaluated many products and we recommend the Second Wind Air
Purification Systems.
How do they work?
There are different technologies used by our Second Wind Air Purifier Systems: All of the Second Wind Air Purification Systems use Ultraviolet germicidal light. Ultraviolet germicidal light has been used since 1936 in controlling airborne pathogens such as viruses and bacteria. Ultraviolet germicidal light is used in many applications: water treatment, hospital surgical rooms, laboratories, fish tanks and ponds, meat packing plants, dairies, etc. As these microscopic bioaerosols are rotated back to the return air assembly (kill zone) and exposed to the germicidal light, their DNA structure is altered, thus sterilizing them.
Some of Second Wind's Air Purification Systems produce a metered amount of singlet oxygen atoms (pure oxygen) that cannot exist on their own. The singlet oxygen atom attaches to bioaerosols and the odor causing gas-phase contaminant and changes their molecular structure to a non-odiferous state.
Photocatalytic Oxidation
The remaining air purification systems use a process called Photocatalytic Oxidation which uses ultraviolet energy and a semiconductor. Destruction of organic compounds and bioaerosols takes place through reactions with Oxygen (O), or hydroxyl radicals (OH). The O, OH reaction with volatile organic compounds (VOC's) drives these divers gas-phase odor cuasing contaminants to change their chemical makeup, thereby reducing odors.
Filtration
Another process used in two of our Air Purifiers is filtration. These units have filters such as standard 1" pleated media, 5" pleated media, 12" Hepa-Type and 1" carbon fiber filtration.
